The Scottish Solar Index

Every competitor in Scotland sells opinions about what solar produces here. We intend to publish measurements instead.

The method

The Solar Care Club’s monitoring tier collects real generation data from real Scottish roofs. Once the sample is large enough to mean something, we will publish the Scottish Solar Index: what solar actually produces in Scotland, broken down by:

• Region (Edinburgh & Lothians, Glasgow & West, Highlands & Islands, and more)
• Roof orientation (south, east-west, north-facing)
• System size (3 kWp, 4 kWp, 6 kWp+)
• Panel age and technology

Every edition will state the sample size (n), the method, and the limitations. We will never publish a figure the sample does not support.

Why this matters

Scotland’s solar yield is lower than England’s — but how much lower, and where, is surprisingly poorly documented. The MCS methodology uses irradiance zones, but real-world performance depends on shading, orientation, inverter efficiency, and local weather patterns that zone-level data cannot capture.

An independent, measured dataset helps homeowners make better decisions, helps installers quote more accurately, and gives journalists and policymakers something real to cite.

Contribute your data

If you have a solar system in Scotland and can share your generation data (from your inverter app, smart meter, or monitoring system), we would welcome your contribution. Every system added makes the index more useful for everyone.
