0% VAT on Solar & Battery
Active until 31 March 2027
Automatic 0% VAT on solar panels and battery storage installations. Typical saving £700–£2,000.
Clean Heating Grant
Active across Scotland
Up to £7,500 grant (£9,000 rural) for heat pump installations. An optional £7,500 interest-free loan is also available.
Energy Efficiency Grant
Active across Scotland
Up to £7,500 grant (£9,000 rural) for insulation, glazing, and other efficiency measures. An optional £7,500 interest-free loan is also available.
Combined Maximum
Both streams together
If eligible for both streams, combined grants of up to £15,000 (£18,000 rural). Optional loans of up to £7,500 per stream are available separately.
HES Solar PV Grant
Stopped 6 June 2024
The standalone solar panel grant is no longer available. However, battery storage is still eligible with heat pump installations.

What MCS certification actually means
A Which? survey of over 1,000 UK homeowners (June 2026) found that 77% had never heard of MCS before being asked — but 75% said it would reassure them once explained. Here is what it means for you.
MCS is the UK quality mark
MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) certifies both the products and the installers. It is the government-recognised standard for renewable energy installations in the UK.
Grant funding requires MCS
Home Energy Scotland grants, the Smart Export Guarantee, and the 0% VAT saving all require installation by an MCS-certified installer. Without it, you cannot access public funding.

TrustMark and the insurance-backed guarantee
TrustMark (3559930) adds a consumer protection layer including alternative dispute resolution and an insurance-backed guarantee so you are covered even if the installer were to cease trading.
The insulation scandal — and what protects you
You may have heard about poor-quality insulation work carried out under earlier government schemes. That happened because work was subcontracted to uncertified installers with insufficient oversight. The government is now consulting on an Installation Assurance Authority and a public register of approved installers (consultation opened June 2026). Your protection today: MCS certification, TrustMark registration, an insurance-backed guarantee, and the TrustMark ADR route. Every badge here is verifiable — and every link takes you to the live register.

Will a battery affect my Feed-in Tariff?
No. Adding a battery or replacing your inverter does not affect your FiT payments — these are protected upgrades.
How much does a battery cost installed?
A Duracell Dura5 (5.32 kWh) typically costs £3,500–£4,500 installed. 0% VAT saves around £700. A free survey gives your exact figure.
Can I get a grant for a battery in Scotland?
HES offers grants for battery storage when installed with a heat pump. Rural: £9,000 grant + £7,500 loan. Urban: £7,500 grant + £7,500 loan. The standalone solar PV grant stopped on 6 June 2024. Figures checked August 2026.
