Solar battery upgrades in the Highlands and Islands

Housing stock

Highland housing is dominated by detached properties, often with large south-facing roof areas and minimal shading. This is ideal for solar. Specific considerations:

• Crofts and agricultural buildings: many Highland properties are on croft land. Solar and battery can be installed on domestic croft houses. However, Home Energy Scotland grants require a natural person on domestic council tax — they are not available for property owned by a business or listed as a business asset.
• Remote access: some Highland properties require longer travel for installation crews. This may affect scheduling but does not typically add to the installed price — a site survey confirms.
• Off-grid potential: for properties with unreliable grid connections, battery storage provides genuine resilience. A stacked Duracell Dura5 system (up to 5 x 5.32 kWh = 26.6 kWh) can cover overnight demand.

DNO: SSEN (Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks)

The Highlands and Islands are in SSEN's licence area. Key differences from central Scotland:

• G98 (up to 3.68 kW export): notification to SSEN, typically 10 working days. Most battery retrofits qualify.
• G99 (above 3.68 kW): SSEN G99 applications in the Highlands can take longer than SPEN — allow 6–12 weeks. Grid capacity constraints are more common in rural areas.
• Export limiting: where grid constraints apply, the system may be export-limited. This does not affect self-consumption or battery charging — only surplus export.

Local yield

HES grants (rural Highland postcodes)

Many Highland postcodes qualify for the rural uplift. The HES package for eligible rural homes is:

• £9,000 grant + £7,500 interest-free loan = £16,500 total support (heat pump stream)
• Requires a heat pump installation alongside battery/solar

A separate energy efficiency grant of up to £9,000 is also available. Maximum combined grants: up to £18,000.

Applicant must be a natural person, owner-occupier, on domestic council tax.

Rural eligibility is postcode-dependent. Inverness city postcodes (IV1–IV3) are NOT rural-uplift eligible — they receive the urban rate (£7,500 grant). We check your postcode during the survey.
